On the other had, the number of side missions only increases by the end of the game. Regardless of their objective, they all feel repetitive, and really become a chore after the middle of Act 2, since by that time game introduces almost no new enemy types and challenges. In fact, side missions is what makes the game much worse that it could've been. Finally, the campaign is absolutely linear, and even side missions provide almost no flexibility. You get new recruits automatically after every mission, and they cost no resources to hire and level up. You get new gear by picking boxes in battles or getting them as rewards for mission objectives. Alas, Gears Tactics doesn't have any of that. And previous XCOM games had even more in terms of strategic planning and managing economy. Even XCOM: Chimera Squad had a lot going beside the tactical combat: chosing the targets/missions, training your fighters, investing in upgrades. However, the game has no depth on a strategic level. Also, overwatch is more useful since the unit can shoot more than once. Even more, some abilities provide more action points, so one unit can easily attack 5 times in a round. Each unit gets 3 APs which can be spent on any action, and attacking doesn't end the unit's turn unlike in XCOM. Gears Tactics has a lot of similarities to new XCOM titles, and on a tactical level it's arguably better (definitely more flexible).

Not a bad tactical game, not great either. Then finally, as I was completing another interminable raid in 3-6, a crash wiped out my mission progress. The endless cascade of side missions in Act 3 spoke to my foolishness.

Ever the completionist, I decided to tune the difficulty down from second highest to the lowest, so I could speed through the rest of the game. Progression is almost non-existent: You use the same guns throughout (with upgrades for more bullets or higher accuracy), levelling is painfully slow, and the limited reset tokens discourage skill tree experimentation.Īt the end of a dreary Act 2, I was debating whether to stop. The main story feels completely inconsequential, and the side (read:slog) missions are nothing but repetitive filler content.

The squad is comprised of cookie cutter leads that are all some variation of "tough guy", plus randomly generated grunts that you'll continually cycle out for higher-level randomly generated grunts.

A game that has interesting ideas, but ultimately does not respect my time.
